Small Talk

Image concept & rendering

Small Talk — was a division of the advertising firm Sive/Young & Rubicam which markets exclusively to children.

The agency’s concept was to use a children’s story format to communicate the peril of avoiding the affect kids have in influencing family purchases. The agency provided the story copy and the subject for the illustrations. My assignment was to interpret the copy and create the illustrations: A happy factory, an executive board meeting and the resulting sad factory.

Refining the concept

The first sketch had the factory in a storybook (fairy tale) landscape. The factory interpretation was fine. However, the agency wanted to show the effect on the people and town.

The image was revised to show a small town city street with people doing various activities. The sketches were scanned and some color added in Photoshop.

The sad factory was accepted into the Society of Illustrators annual exhibit in New York.

To be accepted the work has to be commissioned. The Society of Illustrators is the oldest nonprofit organization dedicated to the art of illustration in America. Notable Society members have been N.C. Wyeth, Rube Goldberg, and Norman Rockwell, among many others.
