Holiday Cards

Card concept • illustration

Several times I was involved with coming up with a Christmas card for our agency. I thought the best way to come up with something unique was to do some sort of unpolished illustration. Hence the grunge reindeer.

Grunge reindeer sketches

The first Christmas card I did a takeoff on Rudolph’s nose. The old metaphor — a brilliant idea = light bulb. Didn’t want to do a standard reindeer.

I also had a reindeer sweater which made its way into the final rendering.

Grunge reindeers must have been in that year.

To be accepted the work has to be commissioned. The Society of Illustrators is the oldest nonprofit organization dedicated to the art of illustration in America. Notable Society members have been N.C. Wyeth, Rube Goldberg, and Norman Rockwell, among many others.
The Night Before

Another Christmas card used a classic Christmas icon — mice. (Was thinking more the Night before Christmas, not the Nutcracker). Deadline was extremely tight on this one. The image had to be done quickly. Necessity dictated a very simple idea. So instead of doing an entire room I came up with the idea of just doing an overhead view. And the bed filled the proportion of the card.
